By the end of first grade, 
 

Reading

I can read my Rainbow Words (200 or more).

I can read my decodables fluently (over 80 words per minute).

I can distinguish the difference between long and short vowels.

I can ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

I can retell stories, demonstrating understanding of key details.

I can distinguish between fiction and nonfiction text.

 

Writing

I can write at least 5 sentences on topic (opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative).

I can use complete sentences.

I can use capital letters and punctuation correctly.

I can spell common C-V-C words correctly.

I use a variety of sentences with adjectives and conjunctions.

 

Listening/Speaking

I participate in large and small group discussions.

I ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

I can follow simple two-step directions.

I can describe people, places, things, and events with details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.

 

Math

I can count, read, write, and compare (< and >) numbers to 100.

I can skip count by 10s, 5s, & 2s.

I know the difference between a +, -, and =.

I can make, label, describe, and extend a pattern.

I can add and subtract math facts to 20 quickly.

I can identify and count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

I can name and describe plane and solid shapes.

I can measure objects in different ways.

I can add and subtract two-digit numbers with regrouping.

 

Social Science

I understand why rules are important.

I can play fair and have good sportsmanship.

I can find California, the United States, the continents and oceans on a map and globe.

I can compare and contrast how life has changed over time (past vs. present).

I know about American symbols and U.S. traditions.

I understand how to use money.
