First Grade Beginning of the Year Information

Welcome back to school and welcome to first grade!

The first grade teaching team consists of Ms. Asis, Ms. Hong, and Ms. Davison.

This is a critical year in your child's education, and the first grade teaching team has developed the following 3 major goals for your child to accomplish by the end of the school year. They are as follows:

1) Students will reach grade level reading fluency of 60 words per minute (WPM).
2) Students will demonstrate grade level proficiency in each academic area as defined by the Common Core State Standards adopted by LAUSD.
3) Students will develop social values, behaviors, and skills that will assure academic success.

The following is general information that you can do at home to help your child prepare for success.

What Should Children Wear to School?
First grade children are required to complete 100 minutes of Physical Education (P.E.) a week. In addition, they like to run and play during recess and lunch. Please be sure that they are dressed comfortably to participate in these activities. No flip-flop type sandals, platform shoes, or open-toed shoes. These kinds of shoes can lead to injury.

Attendance
Please be sure your child arrives at school on time and avoids absences. Each moment away from class is a missed learning opportunity. If your child is absent, be sure to send a note explaining the reason on the first day your child returns to class. Also, be mindful that three (3) tardies in a school year is considered habitual.

Sleep
Most behavior problems occur because children arrive at school sleepy or hungry and are unable to concentrate. Make sure your child gets eight to ten (8-10) hours of sleep each night. If they do not eat breakfast at home, breakfast is provided in the classroom for the first 10-15 minutes of class. Please be sure they arrive ON TIME if they are going to eat in class. Breakfast will not be served after 8:15 AM because there is not enough time for the child to eat.

Snacks
If your child brings snacks from home, we ask that they be light and healthy. Acceptable items include: cut vegetables, fruit, juice, 1/2 a sandwich, crackers, dry cereal or cheese. Cookies, candy, chips, and sodas are not allowed and will be sent home. Aluminum cans are not allowed on campus and will be confiscated. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Homework
Homework is assigned every night. It will usually be a mix of math, reading, phonics, comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, or writing. It should take about twenty to forty (20-40) minutes to complete and needs to be monitored by an adult. Homework reinforces the lessons we are working on in the class, and is an important part of your child's educational success. If your child has difficulty completing their homework, this is a sign that they are also having problems in class.

Children will need supplies such as a pencil, eraser, crayons, scissors, and glue. You might use a shoe box, covered and decorated, as a homework kit to store their supplies in. Please keep all other pencils, markers, crayons, and pens at home for their use. DO NOT send these items to school as it causes a distraction in the classroom. Please keep all personal belongings at home, such as toys, videos, games, and trading cards.

Read to and with your child every night!
If you don't have time, have another family member read with them. Ask them about what sounds they studied that day, and have them give you words that being or end with the target sound. Ask them about songs that we sing, stories we read, or games that we play in the classroom. As your child's oral skills improve, so do their reading and comprehension skills.

Thank you for your support!
